Leadership, does it promise profits?

Leadership and Human Resources is a course that I am taking at the moment; and just got out of one session right now. The topic was Leadership, and does it lead to increased profits? Well the issue here, is how do we define leadership? And do we really need it?

When Steve Jobs left Apple, the company began to sink with a new CEO, then when we came back...well the stock price speaks for it self. But what about the success of IBM? The CEO specialized in PR, but was somehow able to take the corporation into a new direction.

Well the answer to these questions are more difficult than I thought.
